We got a chance to talk to Funny Car Legend Twig Zeigler as the UNFC came into town for the event this weekend.
They might look funny, but they go ridiculously fast. 250-mile-per-hour fast. The Nitro Funny Cars will be burning some serious rubber at the Tucson Dragway northwest of Vail Friday and Saturday night. The United Nitro Funny Car series starts its’ 2019 international tour right here in Southern Arizona.
On Friday, gates will open at 2pm, where you’ll get a chance to meet the racers. They’ll start firing up and running their cars at 6pm and they’ll start their qualifying runs at 8pm. On Saturday, April 13, the gates open at 8am, with the qualifying runs at Noon and 3pm. Drivers must race in 2 qualifying runs before entering the elimination rounds, which will take place at 6pm, 8pm & 9:30pm. The prize for the winner is $7,500 and points will count towards the championship series, where drivers can win an additional $10,000 at the end of the season.
There are a ton of other activities going on at the Dragway throughout the day. At 2pm, all the racers will be signing autographs. You can peruse the car show featuring dragsters and historic cars, that are part of the history of the Tucson Dragway. They’ll even have food trucks and craft beer. The best thing about the races is that you’ll have access to all of the drivers; making it a truly interactive experience.
Admission costs $15 for 1 day or only $20 for both days and kids under 12 are free. There is a $5 discount for military. The Tucson Dragway is located near Houghton and I-10 at 12000 S Houghton Rd. For more information, click here.
