Two Tucson restaurants nominated for 2019 James Beard Awards

Tucson restaurants can compete with the best of ’em.

El Charro Cafe and Chef Don Guerra from Barrio Bread are semifinalists for the 2019 James Beard Awards, which celebrate the country’s best restaurants and chefs.

El Charro Cafe is a community favorite that has been serving authentic Mexican cuisine for 96 years. They have also been a key player in the famous “Who created the Chimichanga?” debate.

Barrio Bread is another longtime favorite in the community. Chef Don Guerra’s passion for baking has brought exceptional quality artisan bread, known for a chewy interior and amazing crusts, to the masses.

Several ceremonies will be held across the country for the various categories. According to the foundation’s website:

The 2019 James Beard Awards Gala will take place on Monday, May 6, at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
