Tucson sets dates for pool openings, lessons and leagues

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - Tucson Parks and Recreation has announced the dates for the opening of its pools, along with its swim lessons, adaptive aquatics, and leagues for the summer.

The city said it will employ more than 230 lifeguards and open 19 summer pools from June 1 to July 31.

Admission to all the city pools, which are listed HERE, is free to all.

Parks and Parks and Recreation will also host swim lessons for children 6 months to 17 years old.

The lessons will be offered for four, two-week sessions. The cost is $15 per session. There will be separate classes for parents and children.

Information on the swimming lessons, competitive swimming, and synchronized swimming leagues, and adaptive aquatics is available HERE.

Guardians can begin registering for the lessons online starting at 9 a.m. Monday, May 19. In-person or phone registration begins on Tuesday, May 20. You can go to Parks and Recreation office at 900 South Randolph Way or call 520-791-4877.

“Due to the limited space available in each session and class, a class registration waitlist will be maintained,” the city said in a release.

SWIM LESSON SCHEDULE
  • Session 1: June 2-12. Registration deadline: May 28.
  • Session 2: June 16-26. Registration deadline: June 11.
  • Session 3: June 30-July 10. Registration deadline: June 25.
  • Session 4: July 14-24. Registration deadline: July 9.
SWIM LESSON BENCHMARKS

Students must register in one of three categories – StarBabies, Swim School, or Stroke School. Below are the benchmarks for each category.

StarBabies (ages 6 months-3 years old): Introduces infants and toddlers to the water in a fun and loving environment. Parents or caregivers are taught effective techniques to teach their infants and toddlers how to float, submerge, move in the water, and roll over to breathe. Classes incorporate songs, activities, and water safety education. Swim diapers and tight-fitting waterproof pants over the swim diaper are required.

Starfish Swim School (ages 3-17 years old): This class is for those who are beginning to learn to swim and cannot swim freestyle across the pool’s deep end. They also cannot tread water for at least 60 seconds.

Starfish Swim School Benchmarks for Completion of Level

  • White Star Benchmark 1: Easily can submerge entire face and body.
  • Red Star Benchmark 2: Independent floating on front and back.
  • Yellow Star Benchmark 3: Can perform the swim-roll-swim method.
  • Blue Star Benchmark 4: Can swim with forward movement with good side breathing body position and proper flutter kick.
  • Green Star Benchmark 5: Can perform front stroke with 1, 2, 3 breathing pattern with face in the water, overarm action and strong flutter kick.
  • Starfish Stroke School (ages 3-17 years old): This class is for children who can easily swim front stroke with a 1, 2, 3 breathing pattern, face in the water, overarm action, and strong flutter kick across the deep end of the pool. They can also tread water for at least 60 seconds in deep water.

Starfish Stroke School Benchmarks for Completion of Level

  • White Star Benchmark 6: Can easily demonstrate fundamentally sound freestyle and backstroke.
  • Red Star Benchmark 7: Can easily demonstrate fundamentally sound elementary backstroke and sidestroke.
  • Yellow Star Benchmark 8: Can easily demonstrate fundamentally sound butterfly.
  • Blue Star Benchmark 9: Can easily demonstrate fundamentally sound breaststroke.
ADAPTIVE AQUATICS

Adaptive swim instruction is available for children ages 5-16 with physical or cognitive disabilities. Parent participation is required. Call 520-837-8059 for prescreening and approval to register for these classes.

COMPETITIVE SWIM TEAM

Swimmers who have been registered with USA Swimming after August 2024 are not eligible to participate. Participants must be able to swim a recognizable competitive stroke one length of the pool without stopping. A Swim test will be giveon n the first day of practice. Registration is capped at 50 per site. Swim championships will be in late July.

  • Dates: June 2 to July 19.
  • Who: Ages 17 and younger.
  • Cost: $30/city-resident; $38/non-city residen.
  • Locations: Archer, Clements, Fort Lowell, Himmel, Purple Heart, Quincie Douglas, Udall.
SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING LEAGUE

Swimmers should be comfortable in deep water. All participants will learn basic synchro skills and a choreographed routine. There will be a skills meet at the end of June, and the summer will wrap up with all swimmers performing in a city-wide water show on July 12.

  • Dates: June 2 to July 12.
  • Who: Ages 6-17 years old (accepting beginners through intermediate levels).
  • Cost: $41/city-resident; $51/non-city resident.
  • Locations: Archer, Clements, Purple Heart, Udall.
