GOLD CANYON, AZ (AZFamily) — East Valley firefighters fought the flames of a fire that ignited at the Renaissance Fairgrounds late Tuesday night.

Crews from the Superstition Fire and Medical District were called to the popular fairgrounds located in Gold Canyon, just west of U.S. 60, around 9:45 p.m. Firefighters arrived and found heavy smoke coming from a steel commercial building.

The fire was upgraded to a first alarm, and additional crews from the Mesa and Gilbert fire departments responded to battle the blaze.

The Superstition Fire and Medical District says firefighters faced intense heat and flames as crews worked to control the fire. No injuries have been reported.

Superstition Fire and Medical Department firefighters are currently on the scene, extinguishing hotspots and cleaning up.

It is not known what sparked the flames.

The Arizona Renaissance Festival sent Arizona’s Family the following statement saying that the fire happened in a backstage storage area and will not affect their current schedule.

<i>There was an incident in a backstage storage area at the Renaissance Festival Fairgrounds. Everybody is OK and we are planning for a beautiful festival weekend this Saturday and Sunday, and we are open through March 30th. No schedule changes.</i>
