Pima County Fair opens Thursday; how to stay safe while enjoying the fun

TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - The Pima County Fair is back after a two-year hiatus because of COVID-19. Fair organizers say more rides than ever before are on the Pima County Fairgrounds and they’ve undergone numerous inspections to ensure they’re safe and ready for riders to enjoy.

“Rides are inspected before opening every day, they’re inspected during erection and tear down, there’s also a third-party inspector on grounds that is here to make sure we’re doing our job and reports back to the fair,” said Chris Lopez, vice president of RCS Carnival.

Lopez said the rides have been used at various locations over the past two years, such as the Arizona State Fair.

Throughout the 10-day stretch, there are 56 rides, 36 games and 18 food vendors for everyone to enjoy. Lopez said three of the rides are new this year.

“We’ve got the New York, New York Fun House, Winky the Whale and a new Liberty Wheel that gives great views of the fairgrounds,” Lopez said.

While riding each ride, Lopez said it’s up to fairgoers to do their part to stay safe as well.

“If I could give any advice at all it would be certainly watch the ride, know your own capabilities, and follow those ride rules and the verbal instruction from the ride operators. And let’s all have a great fun day,” Lopez said.

Gates open at 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and at 11 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The fair will run through May 1.

Tickets can be purchased online or at any carnival ticket box window. Hands must be stamped for re-entry. General admission is $10. Military, seniors and kids aged 6-10 are $5. Kids 5 and under are free.

Construction crews are working on a roadway improvement project on South Houghton Road south of the I-10 interchange.

Traffic attending the Pima County Fair should take the following routes for easy access:

  • Eastbound traffic off the I-10: exit on Rita Road and proceed south to Harrison Road to enter the fairgrounds from Brekke Road or Dawn Road. Entrances and parking will be available at both locations.
  • Westbound traffic off the I-10: take the Houghton Road southbound exit. Traffic should remain in the outside lane to go into the main entrance of the Pima County Fairgrounds. Brekke Road off Houghton Road will remain closed to traffic.
  • Northbound traffic on Houghton Road: will be directed left onto Dawn Road to enter the fairgrounds.
